The Weak Point Is Rarely the Door

People spend a great deal on doors. Thick composite slabs, multipoint strips, hinge bolts, reinforced frames. Then a barrel costing roughly twelve pounds sits in the middle of all that, and the barrel is what somebody actually goes for.

That barrel is the euro cylinder. It is the brass part your key slides into, it is replaceable in about four minutes, and its quality varies enormously. Two cylinders can look identical on the doorstep while one resists a determined attack and the other gives up almost immediately.

This page explains how cylinders fail and what those star ratings really mean. It also shows you how to work out which sort yours is, without taking anything apart. Ring 020 7129 7496 and we will talk the door through with you.

24 Hour Emergency Locksmith Callouts in Camden Town

These are the cylinder-related calls that reach us from around Camden High Street, alongside the ordinary lockouts that never stop.

Cylinder snapped, door now wide open

Replaced with a rated unit and the door made secure again.

15–25 min

Key turning loosely, nothing happening

Usually a failed cam or a broken cylinder. Swapped on the spot.

Within the hour

Attempt failed but the lock feels wrong

Worth replacing anyway, because a stressed cylinder rarely recovers.

Same day

Shut out, keys indoors

Opened without harming the cylinder wherever that is possible.

15–25 min

Key snapped inside the barrel

Remainder lifted out, then a fresh set cut at the door.

Within the hour

Cylinder sticking out well past the handle

A quick measure, then a shorter rated replacement fitted.

Booked in

One thing worth saying plainly: a snapped cylinder leaves a door that merely looks shut. The mechanism underneath has gone, so anybody leaning on it walks straight in. Do not leave it until morning, and do not wedge it and hope. Ring us instead. We carry rated cylinders in several lengths, so the job usually finishes in one visit rather than a boarding up and a return trip.

Locked out locksmith Camden Town

Locked Out in Camden Town?

Tell us what the door is made of first. A timber front door with a mortice behind it needs quite different kit. Composite doors carry a euro cylinder instead, so that answer shapes everything.

Then look at the lock face and say what you see. A keyhole shaped roughly like a small pear almost always means a euro cylinder, whereas a plain round keyhole suggests something older.

Have proof of address ready as well. A utility bill, your tenancy on a phone screen, or somebody upstairs willing to confirm you live there will each do the job.

Finally, wait somewhere busy and lit. Camden High Street stays lively long after the shops shut, so it is far preferable to a dark side turning off Camden Road.

Locksmith near me

Searching Locksmith Near Me in Camden Town? Ask What Cylinder They Carry

It is a short question with a revealing answer. A locksmith who stocks rated cylinders will name the standard without hesitating, while one who fits whatever came in the box tends to change the subject.

Ask about length too. Cylinders come in many sizes, and carrying only one or two means yours gets forced to fit rather than measured properly.

What rating do you fit as standard?Three-star cylinders, or a one-star cylinder paired with a two-star handle, which achieves the same thing.
Do you measure before replacing?Always. A cylinder standing proud of the handle is the single easiest thing to grip and lever.
Where do you travel from? Our unit on Holloway Road in N7, roughly twenty minutes across through Camden Road.
Will you show me the old one?Yes. Seeing the snap line on the brass tends to explain the upgrade better than any sales talk.

Five things worth knowing about cylinders

Five Points About the Barrel in Your Door

None of this needs tools or technical knowledge. All of it is visible from your own doorstep in about two minutes, and it tells you most of what you need.

Snapping Is a Leverage Attack, Not Brute Force

A cheap cylinder has a narrow waist in the middle. Grip the exposed end, apply leverage, and the brass parts along that waist. Afterwards the broken face comes away and the mechanism behind sits exposed. An anti-snap cylinder instead has deliberate sacrificial grooves, so the front section breaks off harmlessly while the working part stays locked.

Protrusion Decides How Easy That Is

Hold a straight edge flat against the handle and look at the cylinder end. Anything sticking out beyond about three millimetres gives somebody something to grip. Flush is the aim. Plenty of doors around Camden Town carry cylinders left over from a previous handle, standing proud by a centimetre or more, and shortening that is cheap.

Door lock fitting →

The Stars Mean Something Specific

Three-star cylinders have passed attack testing on their own. One-star cylinders have not, so they rely on a two-star security handle covering them. Either combination works. What does not work is a one-star cylinder behind an ordinary handle, which is exactly what most doors leave the factory with.

Lock change →

Handles and Escutcheons Matter As Much

A rated handle has a hardened plate protecting the cylinder and will not simply unscrew from outside. Many handles do unscrew from outside. Give yours a gentle wiggle, because movement there is a louder warning than anything the cylinder is doing.

uPVC specialist →

Upgrading Is Genuinely Small Work

Swapping a cylinder means one screw, a slight turn of the key and a straight pull. No drilling, no new door, nothing ordered in. Consequently this is one of very few security improvements that costs little, finishes in minutes and measurably changes the outcome of an attempt.

How a callout works

From Your Call to a Working Door

  3. Whether anything is sticking outA rough measurement helps us arrive with the right length.
  4. A figure agreed beforehandFixed before the van moves, any night premium included, no doorstep extras.

Locksmith Camden Town – Frequently Asked Questions

Working out what you have

How do I tell whether I have a euro cylinder at all?

Look at the keyhole from outside. A euro cylinder gives you a shape like a small pear or a keyhole with a round top and a narrow slot below. A plain round hole, or a large rectangular slot, points at an older mortice lock instead.

Is there any marking that tells me the rating?

Sometimes. Rated cylinders often carry a small kitemark or a star symbol stamped on the face or along the body. Plenty of perfectly good ones are hard to read once paint and grime build up. We therefore tend to check by pulling the cylinder rather than squinting at it.

My cylinder sticks out. How much is too much?

Three millimetres or less is the target. Beyond that you are giving somebody a grip. Anything noticeably proud of the handle is worth shortening, and the fix is cheap.

Does a thicker door make the cylinder safer?

Not really. The cylinder is attacked at its exposed face, so door thickness barely enters into it. That is precisely why good doors with poor barrels fail.

Upgrading sensibly

Should everyone upgrade, or is this oversold?

Many doors genuinely need it and many do not. Where the handle already carries a hardened plate and the cylinder sits flush, you may well be fine. We will say so rather than invent a problem.

Is a three-star cylinder always the answer?

It is the simplest answer. Alternatively a one-star cylinder behind a two-star handle reaches the same place, which suits doors where the handle is being changed anyway.

Can I just buy one online and fit it myself?

You can, although length is where most people come unstuck. Measure from the centre screw outwards on each side separately, because cylinders are frequently uneven rather than symmetrical.

Will upgrading change my keys?

Yes, a new cylinder comes with its own keys. If several doors should share one key, say so beforehand and we will set them up together.

Camden Town buildings

I live in a flat above a shop. Does any of this apply?

Very much so. Your own flat door often has a euro cylinder even where the street door does not. That flat door is also the one actually protecting your things.

The rear door looks newer than the front. Which matters more?

Whichever is weaker, and around here it is usually the back. Rear and side doors get fitted with basic barrels far more often than front doors do.

Our block has a communal entrance. Is that our responsibility?

Normally the freeholder or managing agent handles communal doors, while your own flat door is yours. Report the communal side to them and sort your own in the meantime.

Cost and timing

What does a cylinder swap cost?

It depends on the rating and the length, and we quote it on the phone before travelling. The part itself is modest, and the labour is short.

How long does it actually take?

Usually under fifteen minutes once we have the right length on the van. Most of the visit is measuring and talking rather than fitting.

Can you come out at night for this?

For a broken or snapped cylinder, yes, because that door is not secure. For a planned upgrade, daytime costs you less and suits everybody better.
