Thousands of houses across Hendon were built or extended with an enclosed porch. There is an outer door onto the drive, a small tiled space for coats, then the original front door behind it. It looks like layered protection.
In practice, one of those two doors usually does nothing. Either the outer one carries a cheap latch and the inner one stays unlocked all day, or the inner one is treated as the real door while the porch stands open to anybody. The layering only works when both are genuinely locked.
That same pattern repeats elsewhere in these houses. Integral garages with a door into the hall. Side returns with a second entrance. Conservatories added later. So this page works through the doors that nobody counts. Our engineers reach NW4 in forty to fifty-five minutes. Ring 020 7129 7496.

These are the calls we take most frequently from the district, and several involve a door people had stopped thinking about.
Outer door shut behind you, inner door locked. More common than you would guess, especially in winter.
40–55 minThe everyday lockout. Check the side door and the garage before you ring, since one of them is often open.
40–55 minThat internal door is the one that matters. We secure it tonight whatever state the garage is in.
Dispatched firstA shut door that does not lock is an open door. Worth the same day rather than next week.
Same dayThe handle moves and nothing engages. Usually the mechanism, and usually repairable.
40–55 minSide doors get least use and seize first. We draw the remainder out rather than drilling through.
40–55 minOne habit is worth changing tonight, and it costs nothing. Lock the inner door as well as the outer one whenever the house is empty. A porch full of coats, parcels and car keys is a room, not a barrier, so treat the door behind it as your real front door.

Semis and detached houses here rarely have just one entrance. There is often a side door, a garage door, a conservatory and a back door. Before ringing anybody, walk the whole perimeter once and try each handle.
Then check the garage. Where a garage sits attached to the house, the internal door is frequently left unlocked, because nobody thinks of it as an outside door. If the garage itself opens, you may already be in.
Do not force the porch. Those outer doors are usually lightweight aluminium or uPVC in a thin frame, so they bend rather than open and then never seal again. Afterwards you have two problems instead of one, and the draught lasts until somebody replaces the frame.

A high listing tells you about advertising rather than about distance. NW4 is a proper drive from us, and we say forty to fifty-five minutes because that is what it takes. Anybody quoting twenty minutes is either much closer or not being straight with you.
Ask what happens if the job turns out differently on arrival. A decent answer explains how the price could change and why, before the engineer sets off. A vague answer usually becomes an expensive one on the doorstep.
The doors nobody counts
Every one of these is a genuine way into the house. Yet they get a fraction of the attention the front door receives.
An enclosed porch buys you a second barrier, a place for parcels and somewhere to leave wet coats. It buys nothing at all when the inner door stays on the latch. So decide which door is the real one and lock it properly. Then treat the other as a bonus rather than the main defence.
Lock change →Where the garage is attached, that connecting door leads straight into the hall. Builders routinely fit an internal door there, with an internal handle and no real lock. Because the garage door itself is often the weakest opening on the property, the door behind it deserves a proper lock and a solid leaf.
Door lock fitting →A door opened twice a year stiffens, and the cylinder dries out. Then one day the key turns halfway and snaps. Open it monthly and the problem disappears. A little lubricant made for locks helps as well, though household oil attracts dirt and eventually makes things worse.
Snapped keys →A conservatory turns a solid rear wall into a glazed room with its own outside door. Frequently the original back door is then left open permanently, which effectively moves your security line outward onto the cheapest hardware in the house. Keep the inner door usable and locked when you are out.
Patio doors →Later doors here lock by lifting the handle to throw several hooks at once. When the door drops slightly, those hooks stop meeting their keeps and people start slamming and shoving. Adjustment usually fixes it for a fraction of a replacement. Left alone, the gearbox eventually breaks.

How a callout works
Coverage
NW4 covers Hendon down to Brent Cross and across to West Hendon. Read your postcode out and we will confirm the district.
We usually come up the A1 and across, or take the North Circular when the A1 is heavy. Brent Cross traffic is the one genuine variable and it is worst at weekends. Driveway parking means the engineer generally pulls up outside rather than circling the street.
Ring and tell us which door stopped working. We price it on the call, travel included. Doors made secure tonight, adjustments and upgrades booked whenever suits.

NW4 borders several districts we cover regularly, so ask if your street straddles a boundary.
Both, whenever the house is empty. Where you only lock one, make it the inner door, since that is the solid original leaf in a proper frame. Porch doors are usually lightweight and were never meant to be the only thing between the street and your hallway.
Most policies name a standard for final exit doors without describing your particular layout. So the safe reading is that the door you lock last has to meet it. Your broker can confirm how the wording applies to a porch.
Easily. The outer door swings shut on a windy day while you are looking for keys, and the inner one is already locked. We open these regularly and it is rarely a difficult job. Keeping a spare with a neighbour prevents the repeat.
Forty to fifty-five minutes from Holloway Road, depending on the A1 and the North Circular. We give a realistic window when you ring rather than an encouraging one.
Through the outer one, ideally, so nothing sits in view of the street. Where the letterbox is on the inner door, a porch full of post tells anybody looking that the house is empty. A simple internal catcher solves it either way.
Because the garage itself is usually the weakest opening on the property, and nobody can see somebody working inside it. Once through, they have unlimited time on a door that is often just an internal one. Upgrading that connecting door is among the best value work we do here.
Open it now and find out. Unused doors seize and cylinders dry out, so keys snap at the worst moment. A monthly open and close, plus a lock lubricant rather than household oil, keeps it working.
Often yes, and many people find it simpler. Bear in mind that a single lost key then affects both. Where that worries you, keep the garage separate and accept the extra key on the ring.
Usually the mechanism inside the door, or a door that has dropped so the hooks no longer meet their keeps. Stop forcing the handle, because that is what finally breaks the gearbox. Ring us and describe what the handle does.
Rarely. Most of these doors are repairable, and the mechanism can be replaced without touching the leaf or the frame. We will tell you honestly when a door has genuinely reached the end, though that is the exception.
Doors and frames move with heat and damp, so alignment that works in January can fail in July. That is usually a sign it was already marginal. Adjustment now prevents the breakage later.
They carry a higher rate, and we tell you before setting off. One figure is agreed on the phone and that figure stands, whatever the engineer finds when the door finally opens.
Usually not, because most doors here open without harm. Where damage cannot be avoided, we explain why first and let you decide rather than starting and apologising afterwards.
