Generally a crime reference number from the police and an itemised invoice describing what was damaged and what was fitted. Photograph the door, frame and lock before anybody starts work. We itemise so the claim can be made cleanly, though we are not insurers and cannot tell you what your policy will accept.

Usually, and the two doors are separate problems. A snapped communal cylinder is often the freeholder's or managing agent's cost and we invoice it so you can reclaim. For your own flat door the same proof-of-entitlement question applies as anywhere else, and we will not let anybody past a communal door into somebody else's flat.

We still ask, because it is the same protection your own door gets. Most people have something on a phone even at 2am — a banking app, a delivery confirmation, a tenancy in an email. Where it is genuinely impossible we talk through the options rather than refusing and driving off, but we will not open a door on somebody's say-so alone.
