Not every lockout is the same lockout
The fix depends entirely on what's actually gone wrong at the door, and most people can't tell the difference from the outside. A slipped latch — the spring bolt hasn't fully caught — is often opened without any key at all, using a thin card or a letterbox tool reaching the thumb-turn inside. A deadlocked door, where the key was turned an extra time from outside, needs picking or a locksmith's key, because the latch trick won't touch a thrown deadbolt.
A seized multipoint mechanism is the trickier one: the uPVC door's gearbox has jammed mid-cycle, the handle won't lift, and forcing it usually finishes the gearbox off entirely, turning a lockout into a full mechanism replacement. And a snapped key — the classic anti-snap failure on an older euro cylinder — leaves half the key still in the barrel, which needs extraction before anything else happens.

Should I try to open the door myself while waiting?

Someone offered to "have a go" at my lock while I wait — should I let them?
Politely say no. An untrained attempt with a card or screwdriver often damages the latch, scratches the cylinder face, or snaps a key that was only jammed, not stuck.
Is it safe to remove the door handle to get in?
Don't. Removing a multipoint handle rarely opens the door and can strip the spindle, meaning the whole handle set needs replacing on top of the original problem.
Where should I wait if I'm locked out at night?
Somewhere visible and lit, ideally within sight of the front door so you can let the engineer know it's your building — a nearby café, a lobby, or just a well-lit spot on the street.
How do you get in without damaging my door?

My key snapped in the lock — can you still use my spare key after?

Locks we supply and fit are covered for 180 days, and any key we cut is covered for life. The warranty covers our parts and workmanship — not a lock that was already on the door before we arrived.
Will I need a new lock after you've opened the door?
Usually not. Most lockouts are opened non-destructively and the existing cylinder carries on working exactly as before. A replacement only comes up if the lock had already failed — a stripped gearbox, a seized mortice, or a cylinder damaged before we arrived.
