People spend a great deal on doors. Thick composite slabs, multipoint strips, hinge bolts, reinforced frames. Then a barrel costing roughly twelve pounds sits in the middle of all that, and the barrel is what somebody actually goes for.
That barrel is the euro cylinder. It is the brass part your key slides into, it is replaceable in about four minutes, and its quality varies enormously. Two cylinders can look identical on the doorstep while one resists a determined attack and the other gives up almost immediately.
This page explains how cylinders fail and what those star ratings really mean. It also shows you how to work out which sort yours is, without taking anything apart. Ring 020 7129 7496 and we will talk the door through with you.

Booked inOne thing worth saying plainly: a snapped cylinder leaves a door that merely looks shut. The mechanism underneath has gone, so anybody leaning on it walks straight in. Do not leave it until morning, and do not wedge it and hope. Ring us instead. We carry rated cylinders in several lengths, so the job usually finishes in one visit rather than a boarding up and a return trip.

Tell us what the door is made of first. A timber front door with a mortice behind it needs quite different kit. Composite doors carry a euro cylinder instead, so that answer shapes everything.
Then look at the lock face and say what you see. A keyhole shaped roughly like a small pear almost always means a euro cylinder, whereas a plain round keyhole suggests something older.
Have proof of address ready as well. A utility bill, your tenancy on a phone screen, or somebody upstairs willing to confirm you live there will each do the job.
Finally, wait somewhere busy and lit. Camden High Street stays lively long after the shops shut, so it is far preferable to a dark side turning off Camden Road.
Locksmith near me
It is a short question with a revealing answer. A locksmith who stocks rated cylinders will name the standard without hesitating, while one who fits whatever came in the box tends to change the subject.
Ask about length too. Cylinders come in many sizes, and carrying only one or two means yours gets forced to fit rather than measured properly.
Five things worth knowing about cylinders
None of this needs tools or technical knowledge. All of it is visible from your own doorstep in about two minutes, and it tells you most of what you need.
A cheap cylinder has a narrow waist in the middle. Grip the exposed end, apply leverage, and the brass parts along that waist. Afterwards the broken face comes away and the mechanism behind sits exposed. An anti-snap cylinder instead has deliberate sacrificial grooves, so the front section breaks off harmlessly while the working part stays locked.
Lock replacement →Hold a straight edge flat against the handle and look at the cylinder end. Anything sticking out beyond about three millimetres gives somebody something to grip. Flush is the aim. Plenty of doors around Camden Town carry cylinders left over from a previous handle, standing proud by a centimetre or more, and shortening that is cheap.
Door lock fitting →Three-star cylinders have passed attack testing on their own. One-star cylinders have not, so they rely on a two-star security handle covering them. Either combination works. What does not work is a one-star cylinder behind an ordinary handle, which is exactly what most doors leave the factory with.
Lock change →A rated handle has a hardened plate protecting the cylinder and will not simply unscrew from outside. Many handles do unscrew from outside. Give yours a gentle wiggle, because movement there is a louder warning than anything the cylinder is doing.
uPVC specialist →Swapping a cylinder means one screw, a slight turn of the key and a straight pull. No drilling, no new door, nothing ordered in. Consequently this is one of very few security improvements that costs little, finishes in minutes and measurably changes the outcome of an attempt.

Coverage
Camden Town sits in NW1, inside the London Borough of Camden. Read out your postcode and we will point you at the page covering your address.
We run across from Holloway Road along Camden Road, which moves well except at school time and early evening. The High Street itself crawls at weekends, so the engineer frequently parks on a side turning and walks the last stretch. Controlled parking covers almost everything here, and the van is always left legally rather than on a kerb.
Describe your door and the shape of the keyhole. We will then tell you over the phone whether the cylinder is worth upgrading, what it costs and how long we would be.

Camden Town sits at the western edge of our patch, a short run from everywhere else we cover.
Look at the keyhole from outside. A euro cylinder gives you a shape like a small pear or a keyhole with a round top and a narrow slot below. A plain round hole, or a large rectangular slot, points at an older mortice lock instead.
Sometimes. Rated cylinders often carry a small kitemark or a star symbol stamped on the face or along the body. Plenty of perfectly good ones are hard to read once paint and grime build up. We therefore tend to check by pulling the cylinder rather than squinting at it.
Three millimetres or less is the target. Beyond that you are giving somebody a grip. Anything noticeably proud of the handle is worth shortening, and the fix is cheap.
Not really. The cylinder is attacked at its exposed face, so door thickness barely enters into it. That is precisely why good doors with poor barrels fail.
Many doors genuinely need it and many do not. Where the handle already carries a hardened plate and the cylinder sits flush, you may well be fine. We will say so rather than invent a problem.
It is the simplest answer. Alternatively a one-star cylinder behind a two-star handle reaches the same place, which suits doors where the handle is being changed anyway.
You can, although length is where most people come unstuck. Measure from the centre screw outwards on each side separately, because cylinders are frequently uneven rather than symmetrical.
Yes, a new cylinder comes with its own keys. If several doors should share one key, say so beforehand and we will set them up together.
Very much so. Your own flat door often has a euro cylinder even where the street door does not. That flat door is also the one actually protecting your things.
Whichever is weaker, and around here it is usually the back. Rear and side doors get fitted with basic barrels far more often than front doors do.
Normally the freeholder or managing agent handles communal doors, while your own flat door is yours. Report the communal side to them and sort your own in the meantime.
It depends on the rating and the length, and we quote it on the phone before travelling. The part itself is modest, and the labour is short.
Usually under fifteen minutes once we have the right length on the van. Most of the visit is measuring and talking rather than fitting.
For a broken or snapped cylinder, yes, because that door is not secure. For a planned upgrade, daytime costs you less and suits everybody better.
Camden Town looked after at every hour since 2017. Most doors here are far stronger than the small brass part sitting inside them, and that is usually the cheapest thing to put right.
