Ask most people what protects their front door and they will name the lock. It is the part with a key, the part you interact with, the part adverts talk about. Yet a door is a system of four things, and force finds the weakest one rather than the most famous.
Those four are the lock itself, the frame holding the keep, the hinges on the opposite edge, and any glass in or beside the leaf. Fit a superb cylinder into a soft rotten frame and you have improved nothing. The screws still pull out of the timber under pressure, exactly as they did before.
This page walks through all four, because that is how a door actually gets assessed. Edmonton housing spans interwar terraces, postwar blocks and a great deal of replacement joinery from the nineties, and the weak link differs across them. We reach N18 in forty to fifty-five minutes. Which part failed decides what the repair involves. Below are the calls we attend most across Edmonton, grouped by what actually gave way.
Hardware was the weak point. Replacement should be rated rather than identical to what failed.
Dispatched firstTimber gave way instead. A better barrel here would achieve precisely nothing.
Dispatched firstThe door pivoted out on the opposite edge. Hinge bolts are cheap and would have prevented it.
Dispatched firstThe opening matters more than the pane. Secure tonight, matched glazing afterwards.
Dispatched firstThe ordinary lockout, still the commonest call. Opened intact in the large majority of cases.
40–55 minThe remainder comes out first. Then a straight verdict on the cylinder itself.
45–60 minTelling us which part failed genuinely changes what the van carries. A cylinder job and a frame repair need entirely different kit. Photograph the damage before we begin, since insurers ask. Edmonton sits at the far end of our patch, so forty to fifty-five minutes is honest rather than optimistic.

Forcing your own door is how people discover which part was weakest, and it is an expensive way to find out. A shoulder against the leaf usually splits the frame rather than opening anything. Then you are paying for joinery on top of the entry you needed anyway.
Try the ordinary routes first. Back doors, side doors, a window left on the vent, or a relative holding a spare in the next street. Flats above the Fore Street parades often share a street door, so check whether that or your own entrance is the actual obstacle.
Then wait rather than improvise. Cards, levers and coat hangers scratch the leaf and damage the mechanism without usually working. If part of a key has broken off inside, leave it exactly where it sits. Poking at the remainder drives it deeper and turns a cheap extraction into a full replacement.

Plenty of firms will quote for a lock without looking at anything else. That is faster for them and cheaper on the phone, and it leaves you with a strong barrel bolted into whatever was already failing.
A better question is what they intend to check. Frame condition, hinge screws, keep alignment and any glazing near the lock should all get a glance. None of that takes long. Then ask the usual things: total price, evening rate, and which road the engineer starts from.
The four parts of a door
Assessing a door properly means looking at all four. Here is what each one does, how it fails, and roughly what putting it right involves.
Cylinders and mortices do the job everybody imagines. Older euro barrels can be defeated by leverage, and an anti-snap replacement to the three-star standard removes that. Lever mortices fail differently, usually through wear inside the case. Either way, upgrading the lock only helps where the lock was genuinely the weak point. Confirming that first is the whole trick.
Lock replacement →Everything a lock resists ends up in the timber around the keep. Frames in older Edmonton terraces have often been repaired before, sometimes badly, and screws into soft wood pull out under load. A London bar or a reinforced keep spreads that force along the jamb rather than concentrating it. This is the single most overlooked improvement on any door.
Door lock fitting →Locks protect one side of a door and nothing protects the other unless somebody fitted hinge bolts. Those are small steel pins engaging the frame as the door closes, so the leaf cannot be levered out on the hinge side. They cost very little, fit in under an hour, and matter most on outward-opening doors where the hinge knuckles face the street.
Lock change →A panel beside a door renders the lock irrelevant if a thumbturn sits within reach. Laminated glazing holds together when struck and solves it without changing the look. Where replacing glass is not practical, moving to a key-operated lock works instead, provided everybody inside can still get out easily. That second point matters more than the first.
Security grilles →Fix whatever is weakest rather than whatever is easiest to sell. On a nineties replacement door that usually means the cylinder. On an older terrace it is nearly always the frame. Where glass sits beside the lock, that jumps the queue. Spending a hundred pounds on the right part beats spending four hundred on the wrong one, and we will tell you which is which.

How a callout works
Coverage
N18 covers Upper Edmonton and runs east towards the Lee Valley, bordering four districts. Read your postcode out and we will place you instantly.
We head north via Seven Sisters and the A10, or occasionally the North Circular when Fore Street is solid. Weekday peaks are slow on both, and the retail parks generate their own traffic at weekends. Late evening the run improves considerably. Parking is generally easy once the engineer arrives.
One call settles the figure before anybody travels. Tell us which part of the door gave way and the van arrives carrying the right kit. Emergency cover runs overnight, every night.

N18 sits at the northern end of our patch, alongside districts we work in regularly.
Look at where the damage is. A snapped barrel with an intact frame means the hardware gave way. Split timber around the keep means the frame did. Damage on the hinge side means the door was levered out there. Glass broken beside the lock means neither mattered, because somebody reached through.
Only where the lock was the problem. Fitting an excellent cylinder into a soft or previously repaired frame improves very little, because the screws still pull out under load. Confirming which part is weakest costs nothing and decides where the money should go.
It spreads force along the door frame rather than letting it concentrate at the keep. A steel strip runs up the jamb, fixed through into the structure behind. On older terraces it is frequently the single most useful thing you can add, and it costs less than most people assume.
Forty to fifty-five minutes from Holloway Road, depending on the A10 and Fore Street. Edmonton is at the far end of our patch, so we quote generously. Arriving early beats explaining a delay.
Small steel pins that engage the frame as the door closes, stopping the leaf being levered off its hinge edge. Locks protect only one side of a door. Hinge bolts protect the other, cost very little, and fit in well under an hour.
Then the glass is your weak point rather than the lock. Laminated glazing holds together when struck and keeps the appearance. Alternatively a key-operated lock removes the benefit of reaching through, provided everybody inside can still get out easily. That last point is not negotiable.
Usually hinge drop or a misaligned keep rather than a lock fault. The leaf has sunk slightly and the hooks no longer meet their keeps. Adjustment fixes it. Left alone, the mechanism strains on every close and eventually does fail properly.
Whatever is weakest, which is rarely the most expensive item. On a nineties replacement door that is usually the cylinder. On an older terrace it is nearly always the frame. Where glass sits beside the lock, that jumps ahead of both.
Start with the one most likely to be tried, which is usually the least overlooked rather than the front. Rear and side doors get attention precisely because nobody can see them. Spending everything on the front simply moves the problem round the building.
Sometimes, though it is rarely the first thing to buy. A solid leaf matters most where the existing one is hollow or damaged. Where the leaf is sound and the frame is not, reinforcing the frame achieves far more for a fraction of the price.
Almost always a worn door closer rather than the lock. Once tension is lost, the door rests against the frame without engaging. Replacing the closer is inexpensive, and in a shared building it is usually the freeholder's responsibility.
Keep the door shut and share nothing about your hardware. Genuine firms attend bookings rather than touting door to door. Report it on 101 afterwards, or 999 if you felt threatened, and warn neighbours.
Look closely at the timber around the keep for filler, mismatched paint or screw holes that no longer hold anything. Older Edmonton frames have often been patched after a previous attempt. Filler carries no load at all, which is why a repaired frame frequently fails in the same place twice.
