What happens if I lose the one key that opens everything?
It is the honest downside, and the answer depends on how the system was set up. On a restricted profile, keys are accounted for and a replacement is cut against your card. Where a key is genuinely gone and could be linked to the address, the cylinders in the suite are rekeyed to a new combination — which is one visit rather than replacing hardware, because the locks themselves stay in the doors.
Can you add a door to a system you fitted a year ago?
Yes, and this is the reason we keep the specification on file. An extra cylinder is pinned to the existing combination and arrives working with the keys you already hold. If another locksmith fitted the original system we can often still match it, provided the profile is not one that is restricted to them.
How many keys should I have made?
Enough that nobody needs to borrow one, and few enough that you can name where each is. For a household that is usually one per adult plus a spare kept somewhere safe rather than on a hook by the door. For a building, we write the key count into the design and log it, because a suite where nobody knows how many keys exist is a suite that will need rekeying eventually.
Does this work on uPVC and composite doors?
Yes, and they are among the easiest, because a uPVC multipoint takes a standard euro cylinder that can be pinned alike with any other euro cylinder in the set. The thing worth checking at the same time is door alignment, since a keyed alike system on a door that has dropped simply spreads a stiff mechanism across a new key.
How much does a keyed alike system cost?
It depends almost entirely on how many of your existing locks can stay and how many need replacing, which is what the survey establishes.
